Harry Potter and our use of it in conversation about the political climate
When it comes to talking about politics, it is easy to use our favorite moments from the Harry Potter series to compare and contrast things but why is that our go to?
Harry Potter is the kind of franchise that often sparks conversations even years after we’ve all finished reading it or watching the movies. Mainly because it is easy to connect it to tropes in our everyday life. And now, more than ever, with the way politics are, we tend to talk about Potter and the characters within more often than not.
For instance, let’s look at the American election of 2016. When the election was underway, Trump was called Voldemort and beyond while we, as those fighting against him, were considering ourselves as Harry Potter. Why? Mainly because it is easier to understand and comprehend our hatred for him if we connect it back to a series that means a lot to us.
So…why is Harry Potter so easy to connect to, literally, any kind of political situation? Probably because the series itself is deeply political and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is almost more so. As a whole, Harry and his friends are fighting against a powerful being and trying to do what is right for society. It’s basically like looking at Star Wars and saying that it isn’t political.
Everything has a connection to politics and maybe we just find Harry Potter an easy ground to talk about things on but whatever it is, it connects us as fans because we know how to talk about these things easily.
