Dead Astronauts by Jeff VanderMeer

Jeff VanderMeer is well known in the world of science-fiction for his Southern Reach trilogy, which recently had its first novel adapted into a feature film. But VanderMeer is back this month with an exciting new story set in the Borne universe. And the cover alone is enough to have readers running to the bookstore to pick this one up.

Dead Astronauts isn’t technically a sequel to Borne, but it thrusts readers back into the postapocalyptic universe set up in that novel. According to the book’s official synopsis:

"“Under the watchful eye of The Company, three characters — Grayson, Morse and Chen — shapeshifters, amorphous, part human, part extensions of the landscape, make their way through forces that would consume them. A blue fox, a giant fish and language stretched to the limit.”"

As though the bizarre and fascinating cast isn’t enough to appeal to science-fiction fans, though, these characters are up against a corporation that could very well mean the end of their world. That concept is undoubtedly intended to parallel some of the real-world companies that seem to be “taking over,” and it sets the story up to address some important problems throughout its pages.

Dead Astronauts sounds like a story unlike any we’ve seen before, and we know VanderMeer is skilled at writing unique concepts that tackle real-world issues. The book hits shelves on December 3, so if you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary this month, this is the story for you.
