Frozen 2: 5 moments from the movie that will probably make you cry
If there’s one thing we can say about Frozen 2, it’s that it amps up the emotions from the first one. Which scenes will make you cry?
Frozen 2 does a solid job of expanding on the world and story put in place by the first film, delving deeper into the setting, characters, and history laid out in the original. But one other thing the sequel does a bit better than its predecessor is amping up the emotions. Sure, Frozen took viewers on an roller coaster wrought with feelings surrounding love and sisterhood — but it’s nothing in comparison to the second movie.
Perhaps it’s just because we know the characters better now, or maybe it’s because their relationships with one another have grown. Either way, Frozen 2 will tug at viewers’ heartstrings, and it might even evoke some waterworks.
Here are five moments from the film that will probably make you tear up a little (or, you know… a lot).
The flashback to Anna and Elsa’s childhood
At the beginning of Frozen 2, fans get a look at what Anna and Elsa’s childhood was like before that tragic accident that led to Elsa staying locked in her room all the time. And knowing what we already do — that tragedy is coming for the sisters — it’s hard to watch them and their parents having an ordinary night, just a happy family getting ready to go to sleep.
If you’re that attached to these characters, this scene may make you tear up a little. After all, we know this happiness won’t last — and that makes it hard to fall into the moment without feeling bad about it.
When Elsa breaks her promise
For the first half of the film, Elsa promises Anna that they’ll figure out what’s happening to Arendelle and the Enchanted Forest together. But as the story unfolds, Elsa realizes that the truth is something she’ll need to uncover on her own. And even if viewers can agree that Elsa’s headed down a path Anna can’t follow her on, it’s difficult to watch her break her promise to her sister.
The pain and betrayal Anna so clearly feels in this moment is made that much worse by the fact that it seems like Elsa knows she might not come back.
When Olaf melts
We’ve been here before, but it never gets any easier to watch Olaf melt. This time around, however, he’s become such an integral part of Anna’s life, and it makes it that much worse on the audience. His calm acceptance of his fate is even more heartbreaking; it would almost be easier if he refused to accept what’s happening.
And, of course, Olaf’s metling also signals to Anna that something isn’t quite right with her sister. If her magic on the snowman is wearing off, there’s a reason — and Anna believes that it’s because Elsa’s perished on her journey to find the truth. This season painful on multiple levels, and you can’t help but cry for Anna.
When Anna sings “The Next Right Thing”
The soundtrack for Frozen 2 tackles a number of relatable topics, but “The Next Right Thing” is possibly the most emotional song of the bunch. Anna sings this one after she finds out Elsa is gone and after Olaf melts, and it’s clear from the beginning that this is a song about loss and grief.
“The Next Right Thing” is a beautifully written and sung piece, and it’s sure to pull at your heartstrings. Anna’s resolve to do “the next right thing” in spite of her losses is an inspiration, and it’ll make you love her character that much more. (It may also make you burst into tears…)
When Anna finds out Elsa’s alive
If you’re the type who cries during happy moments just as much as you do during the heartbreaking ones, you’ll probably tear up when Anna and Elsa reunite toward the end of the movie. After everything the audience goes through alongside the two sisters, it’s nearly impossible not to experience the overwhelming joy of seeing her sister and Olaf return with her.
And for some of us, such joy just brings on even more tears.
