24. A Christmas Story

Don’t hate me, but A Christmas Story is another one of those movies I don’t love. In fact, if it wouldn’t get me banned from my cousin’s Christmas list, I might have ditched this one too.

Growing up, I remember the day when this movie would play on a 24 hour loop. My cousin would keep the channel it was playing on up on the TV the entire 24 hours (seriously even while she was sleeping). It got to a point where I thought I could quote this movie.

So, while I understand why it is typically a favorite for many people, in my mind this is simply not the ultimate Christmas movie (even if they try to be with a name like A Christmas Story). Considering how many times I have actually watched this movie (way more than I ever wanted), it has to make our top 25 Christmas movies list. After all, if you have ever watched a movie so much that you know full scenes and quotes, it should probably make a top anything list.

Perhaps the only thing I truly love about this movie is the grand prize leg lamp that has become so iconic that it pops up in stores every Christmas since this movie first debuted. I have seen the leg lamp as part of more decoration displays and gift idea lists than I ever thought possible. And it is that kind of iconic imagery that really does give this movie the boost it needs to be a must watch Christmas movie… at least once.
