NBC renews Days of Our Lives following fan backlash

Following news of the entire Days of Our Lives cast being removed from contract in lieu of a digital series, NBC has renewed the show for its 56th season.
The announcement that NBC’s longest-running television series, Days of Our Lives, has been renewed for another season comes only days after it was announced that the show’s entire cast had been let go from their contracts. News shortly followed that the show would go on hiatus at the end of November and switch to a digital series reuniting former characters from the 2000s.
The removal of the cast from contract was seen as a money-saving ploy by many fans, especially as NBC’s and Days of Our Lives’ distributor, Sony Pictures TV, was in the middle of negotiating for the next season. However, these negotiations were put on the fast track due to the almost-immediate fan outcry over the news of the contract releases.
A far cry from the soap opera heydays of the ’80s and ’90s, the daytime television landscape has now dwindled down to only four remaining scripted television series consisting of Days of Our Lives, ABC’s General Hospital, and CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Cancellation of long-running daytime dramas such as As the World Turns and All My Children have been attributed to budgeting issues amid declining linear ratings.
For that reason, it’s refreshing to see that a series like Days of Our Lives still has such a dedicated fanbase — one that’s willing to rally behind the series if needed.
