The Grey’s Anatomy fall finale gave Meredith a potential new love interest, thanks to the generosity of an old friend.

Well, they did it. Grey’s Anatomy did the one thing we very specifically asked them not to do. They took a perfect, beautiful, unbreakable relationship and threw in a twist this couple is never going to be able to come back from.

And that’s not even the most shocking thing that happened on the Grey’s Anatomy fall finale.

First, let’s start with Jo, because her storyline was the least dramatic of them all. She not only cared for a surrendered infant: She brought him home. You’re not supposed to do that. Is this considered kidnapping? Unknown.

A few more rapid-fire mentions: Maggie is on the verge of a nervous breakdown (and quit her job), Richard and Gemma totally aren’t having an affair (yet), and Levi is apparently still the most hated person in his intern class. Poor guy!

Some not so great news (even if you did have a hunch): Bailey’s pregnancy is no more. You know what? She really doesn’t deserve this. Even though she’s pushed all our buttons these last nine weeks, she still deserved to be happy. Now she has yet another reason to be sad, and she really didn’t need that.

It’s probably fair if you didn’t see this coming. But it became pretty obvious after Meredith forgave Bailey so quickly after the hearing and she was so quick to rehire her, that all the terrible things Bailey had done up to that point were far from accidental.

Admittedly, her character was in some serious need of sympathy. Her “mean side” needed to rage for a while in order to reveal the hurt and despair underneath. That just makes a miscarriage so much more heartbreaking.

Speaking of pregnancies, it looks like we’re back down to just one. But oh hey, because Amelia can never be truly happy according to the rules of Grey’s Anatomy, it turns out she was wrong about being 20 weeks along. She’s actually 24 weeks pregnant.

Which implies that Link isn’t the father. Owen is.

Technically the guy begged and begged for kids for years and now he was two … maybe three? Be careful what you wish for? HOW DARE YOU THREATEN TO TEAR APART AMELINK AFTER YOU WERE SPECIFICALLY TOLD NOT TO?

After all this drama, even the characters on the show needed a drink. Enter Joe’s Bar, you know, the place we know and love and might riot if anything bad ever happened to it.

And that’s how the episode — and the first half of Grey’s Anatomy’s sixteenth season — ends. A car crashes into the bar. The ceiling might collapse. It’s a whole thing. Station 19 is on it (apparently).

Who was driving the car? This we don’t know. Could it have been Maggie, so distracted by her forthcoming freak-out that she lost control while at the wheel?

We don’t THINK she’s the one who crashed the car into the bar, but at this point, anything is possible.

And finally, we can’t conclude our discussion of this tornado of an episode without mentioning the “package” Cristina sent to Meredith. You know, the one she kept asking about throughout the episode.

It wasn’t Cristina in a box (though that would have been the twist that would have set up the most unbearable yet amazing cliffhanger in years). But it was a person? Maybe?

It’s still just a theory at this point, but it’s very possible the new pediatric surgeon — he’s already been given the name McWidow? — is Cristina’s “gift” to her BFF.

Would that surprise us? Not even a little bit. It’s a little too soon for a rebound after DeLuca, but it’s definitely time to put MerLuca to sleep for the rest of forever. We barely know this guy and we already like him. Or do we? We’re not quite sure.

But as always, putting the two of them in an elevator for just a short amount of time pretty much sealed the deal. Something is going to happen between them. Whether or not it lasts … well, we’ll just have to wait and find out.

Are Mer and McWidow the next couple to hit it off? Is Owen the true father of Amelia’s baby? Will Tom and Teddy finally get their chance at a happily ever after? Who knows. Come back on January 14 to find out.
