15 Grey’s Anatomy couples ranked on their relationship functionality

8. Jackson and April
Even though April and Jackson did eventually end things on good terms — it took a near-death experience or two for them to get there, but hey, they got there — their relationship started out rocky and continued to crumble the entire time they were together.
The couple met as interns, and at first seemingly had nothing in common. When they did start to hit it off, fans really couldn’t decide if they were going to root for Japril. Ultimately, April leaving Matthew at the altar to be with Jackson instead was supposed to be a sweet moment, but really ended up serving as an early indicator that things were going to remain complicated.
Some couples can come from different religious backgrounds and make it work just fine — practicing the same religion is not a prerequisite for functionality in this context. But when one party is deeply devoted to their practices and the other passionately declines to participate, things can get rough.
And that’s what happened with Jackson and April. She just could not accept that he did not want to be part of her religion, the same way he had a hard time accepting that her ways were not going to change. They couldn’t find middle ground, and it — among other things — broke them apart.
They did work through losing a child together, something many couples can’t do. And in the end, almost losing April after her accident helped to change Jackson’s perspective on life even though they weren’t together anymore. There were good parts of Japril. But not enough of them to form a relationship that could stand every trial.
