Ring out the bells because the end (of Poldark) is nigh. The final glorious hour of gratuitous Aidan Turner content is approaching.

But as the show draws to its close, we have just one question: how on earth is it going to tie up all those loose ends in one episode?

We left our beloved characters at quite the turning point last week. Ross seemed to have turned on England and allied himself with France (who in turn were doing a soft invasion of Cornwall by *checks notes* living in a mine). George actually looked uncomfortable with some evil-doing. Merceron and Hanson appeared to lay out their plans and look, for all intents and purposes, unbeatable, with Spymaster Wickham in their pocket along with everyone else.

All the while poor Geoffrey Charles was getting his heart broken.

So what will come now? The story has jumped forward a few months in the final episode, and PBS’ official synopsis promises Ross and friends’ “most daring plan yet to save themselves and their country”.

Can we safely assume Ross hasn’t actually turned his back on his country then, despite all appearances to the contrary? He’s certainly smack talking it behind its back in the preview.

And Demelza, for one, has noticed something’s up – as he knew she would. He knew his behaviour was likely to be inexplicable (what’s new?) so what does he do? Confide in his wife? No, of course not, he tells Dwight to look out for her instead.

Maybe he’s doing all this for the right reasons (helped of course by a preview that seems intent on leading us down the garden path) and maybe he thinks he’s doing the right thing to keep his family safe but, seriously, hasn’t Demelza had enough of this nonsense? Use your words, Ross!

It gets worse. Indeed, whilst the word ‘treason’ looms heavy over this final episode, and Merceron, Hanson and George all look ready to tighten the noose over their common enemy, the treason that hurts the most might be the treason against our hearts (…sorry).

Tess Tregidden, aka the human embodiment of toothache, is looking meaningfully into Ross’ eyes in a dimly lit cave and…oh no? Is Demelza there too? Catching them at it?

We can only hope our hero isn’t that stupid. In any case, the preview shows Demelza’s stress headaches are back as she frowns intently at the back of her husband. As the gap between them widens, will Tess yet again be the one to stick her oar in and open it further?

Please, no. Save Romelza. Save the world.
