Mad-Eye Moody and his tragic story that we never really take a look at separately
When it comes to tragic characters, Harry Potter is full of them but there is something about Mad-Eye Moody that is upsetting and heartbreaking no matter what we do.
Mad-Eye Moody was the professor who we thought we knew well after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire only to discover that it was never really him we got to meet. Throughout the series, we saw very little into the world of Mad-Eye Moody and then, when we started to see more about him, he died.
It’s tragic not because we didn’t get to meet him but rather because we watched his life be dedicated to Harry and then he had nothing. From what we can tell, he just constantly took care of others and never really got to live outside of that.
At least, from what we’ve seen. There is a beautiful aspect of each of these characters because we don’t know their lives outside of Harry’s view of them and, for Mad-Eye, it’s almost worse. He never really got to know the real Mad-Eye and the bits he did, were just what he saw through the Order of the Phoenix.
After all, every adult in the Harry Potter series is seen almost through fragments but it’d be nice to know Mad-Eye Moody a little bit more than we do know. Seeing him interacting with the Order and the characters at Hogwarts? It’d be lovely to see him as a fully-formed person instead of this idea of what he was outside of Hogwarts and fighting Voldemort. Mad-Eye Moody was more than just a professor and it’s sad we’ll never see him past that.
