The Good Place season 4 episode 7 review: Down to the last second
The Good Place leads us into the very last seconds of the experiment. Can their Hail Mary play work in their favor? Or will they lose the game entirely?
The Good Place jumps forward another six months to take us to the final day of the grand experiment. Can the group’s Hail Mary play actually work in their favor? Or will they lose the game entirely?
We’ll have to keep watching to find out…
Not-so-short summary & analysis
It is quite literally the last day of the experiment. They’re throwing a big shindig tonight and are doing a last-minute point grab at the party. You can tell the stress is getting to Eleanor. She even tries to get Janet to get into the obelisk.
And Simone’s the one who figured it out — or at least knows something is up. And then… Tahani kind of blows it by mentioning Jason talking. And then John spills the tea about Jason. And then Brent says that he actually belongs in the Best Place.
And Simone wants to find out what’s going on. Which means all of her good deeds were under false pretenses. This means the experiment has gone… well, poorly.
Things really do like falling apart so close to the end of things. It gets even worse when a sinkhole appears in the middle of Michael’s terrible magic show and Brent hangs on for dear life.
Eleanor makes Simone, Chidi, and John watch after Brent to make sure he doesn’t fall down the hole, and Simone and John want to leave and let Brent fend for himself. But Chidi wants to save him. It doesn’t matter what Brent would do for Chidi. It’s his ethical duty to help him.
So Simone and Chidi break up (the most boring breakup, according to John), Simone and John take off in the Escalade, and the crew returns to the sinkhole with ten minutes left to find Brent and Chidi hanging on for dear life.
”If there’s anything I know in this world, it’s that you can blow up the same thing twice,” Jason advises.
And the last three minutes are so great. We get Eleanor and Michael both doing the evil demon laugh and making fun of Brent for thinking he was actually in the Good Place, and then they leave it up to Chidi and Brent to make it up in the literal last minute.
But Brent doesn’t quite get his apology out before things freeze. Will it count? Or is it too little, too late?
Favorite moments & lines
Michael learning magic is probably the most Michael thing he could do. It also reminds me of Paul Rudd under house arrest in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Close-up magic!
”You could work the coat check at the Met Gala!” Tahani tells everyone as they’re dressed to the nines for the party.
”Brent is a toilet full of broccoli.” Which is apparently the opposite of a box of donuts.
Even after all the reboots, Chidi knows he’s in the Bad Place because of all the almond milk. It’s so much fun that it’s a running gag through every single season.
As we head toward Thanksgiving, we have to expect The Good Place to take a week off. But not yet! They’re still trudging forward next week. Will the final verdict be for or against adjusting the point system?
