His Dark Materials premiere live stream: Watch online
Philip Pullman’s beloved young adult fantasy series, His Dark Materials, premieres on HBO tonight. Here’s everything you need to know.
After an unsuccessful film adaptation in 2007, Philip Pullman’s beloved series of books, His Dark Materials is back in a new television series produced by HBO and the BBC.
His Dark Materials chronicles a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) who gets swept up into a world of mysteries, adventures, and danger when the glamorous Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) comes to visit her at Oxford.
The series also stars James McAvoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda along with several CGI animals of all shapes and sizes!
HBO’s official synopsis for the series reads:
"Based on author Philip Pullman’s beloved trilogy, His Dark Materials follows Lyra, a brave young woman from another world. Lyra’s quest to find her kidnapped friend leads her to uncover a sinister plot of a secret organization, encounter extraordinary beings and protect dangerous secrets."

This season will chronicle the first book in Pullman’s trilogy, The Golden Compass and production has already begun on season 2, so you don’t have to worry about getting sucked into a show only for it to get canceled (or for fans of the books, not getting to see the entire series be adapted).
According to IMDB, the synopsis for the premiere reads:
"Orphan Lyra Belacqua’s world is turned upside-down by her long-absent uncle’s return from the north, while the glamorous Mrs Coulter visits."
While Miranda’s presence has been touted a lot in the previews, it is likely we won’t see him for a few episodes at least. However, James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel and Ruth Wilson’s Mrs. Coulter both promise to make an appearance off the bat with characters that are at turns charming and terrifying.
