The Good Place: Everyone is improving on their past selves
The Good Place has always shown how people can become better versions of themselves. This week’s episode showed us just how true that is–for everyone
The Good Place has always been a feelgood show, even when it comes to heavy subjects like moral philosophy and butt spiders.
In this week’s episode, splitting up our team seemed to benefit everyone, and the writers, cast, and crew showed us just how much everyone has grown since the start of season one… or the many resets of season two.
As they make their way through the Bad Place HQ, Michael reminisces to Jason about how ashamed he is of what he once was. He knows he’s better now and a completely different demon, and he’s happy with what he’s become. Proud, even.
Likewise, Jason has been more clear-minded in what he wants and when his friends need his help. We already did an appreciation post last week, but this week he doubled down and successfully rescued real Janet from the Bad Place. And even got over his disappointment in the Jacksonville Jaguars cutting Blake Bortles!
Back in the Neighborhood, Eleanor has come into her own as a pretend architect. She’s figured out how to make things work and is willingly sacrificing her happiness for the greater good of humanity. Does that sound like a typical Shellstrop to you?
Having all of her memories back, it’s no wonder that Tahani has been able to weather John the gossip blogger as well as she had. In this week’s episode, she came to understand that while she’s better than before and much less conceited, she still has growth opportunities to become better and help in her own way.
Even Derek gets in on the action, knowing he’ll be a better Derek after rebooting himself a few more times. He seems to have gotten past his jealous phase and is truly on Team Cockroach now.
Heck, even Chidi is a better version of himself, blissfully unaware of the stakes and actually enjoying (after)life for a change.
The Good Place rarely disappoints. Even though we know and understand that our main characters have evolved and grown, we may not have known just how much until this latest episode.
And all it truly means is that we’re not in the endgame just yet. Something else is going to get thrown into the mix. As if the experiment hasn’t even started yet.
