Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has officially been canceled
Most fans knew it was coming, but it doesn’t make it burn any less: Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has officially been canceled at Freeform.
It’s official: Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has been canceled after only two seasons, adding to the list of Marvel television series that have gotten the axe over the past year or so. Unlike the Netflix shows, however, Cloak and Dagger aired on a Disney-owned network (Freeform), but that doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference.
In fact, many fans anticipated the show’s end after Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb, announced that he is leaving the company. Loeb was the one who developed Cloak and Dagger, and it seems the show will not go on without him. The series has also been receiving lower ratings since its second season aired,
Freeform released a statement Thursday, stating, “We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told. We are also grateful to our incredible talent Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”
With many of Marvel’s Netflix shows and Hulu’s Ghostrider also getting canceled — and Agents of SHIELD ending after season 7 — it seems that the future of MCU television will primarily be housed on Disney+. There’s quite a lineup of MCU series already, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wandavision, and many more.
Outside of Disney’s streaming service, Marvel’s Runaways appears to be the only series left on an outside network — though Helstrom will also be here soon.
Even with plenty of new MCU TV series to look forward to, the early end for Cloak and Dagger comes as a blow to fans who’d hoped to see how things would progress. The continuous cancellations also don’t bode well for MCU TV overall. If fans are expecting their favorite series to get cancelled all the time, how can they enjoy them? With any luck, the Disney+ shows won’t have such problems.
