Which Guardian of the Galaxy should have their own film? James Gunn has the right answer

We’d love to spend more time with all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but James Gunn weighed in on which one should have their own film — and honestly, let’s make that happen.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have a while to go before Guardians of the Galaxy 3 arrives and we can spend more time with our favorite group of spacefaring idiots. And every member of the Guardians of the Galaxy deserves more screen time — after all, it’s hard to choose who’s the most comical or interesting character of the group.

But during a Q&A session on Instagram, Cinema Blend reports that James Gunn shared which Guardian deserves their own solo film. And honestly, we have to agree. The director chose Dave Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer, and if there was ever a character we’d love to see more of, it’s him.

The most obvious reason to give Drax a solo movie would be the humor he brings to the big screen, which has made him a fast fan favorite in the MCU. Drax’s movie would be full of him moving so slowly that he’s impercetible and dropping other ridiculous one liners.

But given Drax’s history with Thanos, a solo film would also open up some interesting prequel opportunities — and some fun chances to revisit old storylines and characters. From the first Guardians of the Galaxy, we know that Drax’s family was killed when Thanos came to “balance” his planet — the event that eventually led him to seek vengeance and become “The Destroyer.”

While we don’t see a lot of serious moments from Drax during the Guardians and Avengers films, exploring this aspect of his past could show fans a new side of his character. It’d be fascinating to see his transformation and to meet the family viewers hear so much about during the Guardians movies.

Bautista agrees with this sentiment, and he’s mentioned during previous interviews that he believes Drax’s past should be explored in more depth.

“I really wish they would tell the story of Drax’s family,” the actor told Cinema Blend. “I think it’s a beautiful story, and I think it’s been lost and overlooked a little bit. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking emotional thing to know where that love for his family and that heartbreak over his family being lost and murdered, where it comes from I think… I really pushed and fought for the Drax standalone film, but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.”

It’s a shame that a Drax movie is unlikely, but he’d definitely be our first pick for a solo film (as much as we’d love to know what inspired Rocket’s creation). If we can’t have a standalone prequel for Drax, though, we can cross our fingers that we see a lot more of him when the third Guardians installment finally arrives.
