Episode 4 marks the halfway point of Poldark’s final season. (Have we mentioned that it’s ending this year?) Unfortunately, things look unlikely to be winding up any time soon.

Episode 3 of Poldark left George on the edge of despair (literally), and Dwight about to offer his help in order to bring him back to himself. We never thought we’d be so thankful to see George back up to his old tricks, but truly, we are.

After Uncle Cary found himself at the end of his nephew’s barrel last week, Ross’ old mate, Ned, finds himself staring down George’s gun this time (if it happens again, we shall have to start a sweepstakes), but at this point it is hard to tell whose side we are on.

Ned, whose repeated recklessness is less a character trait at this point and more of a deep irritant to both us and Dwight, mildly edges out George because of the former’s lovely wife and socialist tendencies.

Nevertheless, his continual refusal to listen to the advice of those around him does test our loyalties yet again, and this time he seems to be leading a braying mob to George’s door. Not exactly flying under the radar, is it? The British Establishment must be rubbing their hands together in glee.

To make matters worse, tricky Tess Tregidden is both being paid by Ned’s nemesis, Ralph Hanson, (shown in the preview just as Ross warns Ned of spies — subtle, Poldark, as always) and leading Ned’s charge to Trenwith. Honestly, Ned might be honorable, but at what point does his inability to resist a trap set by those less so become stupidity instead?

If we were to summarize Poldark season 5 so far, we’d say it’s Ned doing something impossibly foolish, followed by Ross immediately handing Demelza his beer. Not to use too obvious a mining metaphor, but since Ned is historically headed for strife ([River Song voice]: spoilers), is it fair to assume that his main role this season is as Ross’ canary?

Indeed, Ross, not one to be outdone on the noble to a fault front, is yet again raising the blood pressure of his banker and other allies by offering to buy George’s mine, gambling ostensibly everything without consulting his wife (long-suffering sigh).

And there’s plenty more where that came from, with Geoffrey Charles’ burgeoning relationship with Cecily about to hit the proverbial rocks and Morwenna’s estranged toddler son making an actual appearance. Hearts will be broken and patience shall be tested (mostly Demelza’s).

Sounds like a great weekend, to be honest.

PBS’ official synopsis for tonight’s episode says:

"“Ross receives hopeful news and Dwight gains unexpected patients. Morwenna keeps a secret from Drake, and Geoffrey Charles and Cecily discover the devastating truth of Ralph and Cary’s plan.”"
