How will Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker handle Reylo?

Actress Daisy Ridley has confirmed that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will address whatever’s going on between Rey and Kylo Ren. But how?

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker only two months away, more and more details about the film have been coming to the surface. (Anything to get our Star Wars-loving hearts more excited about the big finale, right?) And the fates of two characters in particular have been on fans’ minds leading up to the final installment in the Skywalker Saga: Rey and Kylo Ren.

Footage from Disney’s D23 Expo showed Rey wielding a double-edged red lightsaber, so fans are already wondering what Rey’s journey during the final film will look like. And, of course, those who are interested in the “Reylo” ship that pairs Rey and the trilogy’s villain, Kylo Ren, together are especially interested to see how Rey’s complicated relationship to the Dark Side unfolds.

And Daisy Ridley has some good news for Reylo shippers. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress confirmed that Episode IX will address the relationship between the two characters. Of course, it doesn’t sound like things will peachy or romanticized by any means. But the trilogy also won’t overlook such a powerful connection, so at least fans of the pair will get some closure.

“J.J. does deal with [it]. It’s a very complex issue,” Ridley explained. “People talk about toxic relationships and whatever it is. It’s no joke, and I think it’s dealt with really well because it’s not skimmed over.”

From Ridley’s comments, it also appears that fans who aren’t onboard with the Reylo ship may be satisfied with the film’s handling of their connection. There’s no doubt that the two characters have something going on between them — even if it’s not necessarily in Rey’s best interests — and Ridley’s comments suggest that the film will emphasize the toxicity underlying their relationship to one another.

Ridley counts herself among those who don’t really want to see the two characters get together, but she also stated that she doesn’t mind hearing people’s theories.

“It does not bother me, people writing theories,” the actress said. “It’s really fun hearing them. Plus, because I know what’s sort of going to happen, I think it’ll be really interesting to see people’s reactions to [the final film]. Obviously, there’s this whole Reylo thing and some people are very passionate about it, some aren’t.”

Whichever camp you find yourself in, it sounds like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will showcase plenty of tensions between its two most integral characters. And whether you ship them or not, their gravitation toward one another certainly makes the whole trilogy more interesting to watch.
