Harry Potter and the Dark Arts: Why fans are fascinated with Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters
When it comes to the Death Eaters, Harry Potter fans tend to like to learn about Voldemort and his followers but what is it about the Dark Arts that fans find so appealing?
The Harry Potter series did teach us that Voldemort was bad and we shouldn’t look at the Dark Arts with a keen eye. And yet we often find ourselves wanting to see what inspired those to turn to them to do so. Why? Probably because we often tend to look at the power that the darkness holds and those who fall prey to it.
Think about Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise. We often look at him and the Storm Troopers in the same way we do Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Not in a way that is praising what they stood for but rather in a way that looks at their lust of power and how to avoid it. No one wants to be Voldemort. No one really wants to even try the Unforgivable Curses. Or at least, most of us don’t.
What we are more fascinated by is the desire to do so. What drives a person to want to commit these acts? That kind of power, that desire to obtain it? That’s what is more fascinating than the evils these characters thrive to do. So sure, Voldemort is a villain, but those who look to him and the Death Eaters and want to know more aren’t bad people. They just want to explore what drives Voldemort (or at least, that’s what I hope is the case).
