The Good Place season 4 episode 3 review: Stomachaches are back!
The Good Place has yet to deliver on Chidi stomachaches this season, but this third episode brings them in with a vengeance. Can Chidi survive it all?
The Good Place has always had fun torturing its characters, and this week is no exception. If you were missing your Chidi stomachaches, this episode is full of them!
Not-So-Short Summary & Analysis
Chidi is chillaxing. He’s almost the happiest we’ve ever seen him. He’s even abandoned his study group, since Brent claimed to not need it. Eleanor and Michael realize that the big issue is that Chidi isn’t being tortured. So they sick Jason on him with the same schtick as before — he’s not a Buddhist monk, he’s not supposed to be here.
A week goes by and Chidi is as stressed-out as ever. Jason has a brand new bud hole, and all he has to do is be himself and Chidi loses his mind.
Meanwhile, Tahani and Janet throw John a spa day to get on his good side and try to get him to join Chidi’s study group. Tahani has Janet create an exact replica of Victoria Beckham’s spa for them, but it’s not enough to get John to want to study ethics in the afterlife.
And it gets thrown back in Tahani’s face when she tries to confront John about becoming a better person. He throws it back at her saying she could have been a better person with the means she had; he was just a blogger trying to make a living by any means necessary.
John and Tahani do make up because she realizes that they were both miserable, no matter which side of the velvet rope they were on.
Eleanor and Michael throw a luau for the Neighborhood and set up Chidi to cover for Jason’s biggest desire: his motorcycle with an airbrushed Pamela Anderson on the side. And if you hadn’t figured it out by now, Eleanor’s taking out some anger out on Chidi. And he even feels it and confronts them — except he makes Eleanor break down crying. “I made God cry!” Chidi exclaims, getting an even worse stomachache than before.
Instead, Chidi decides to teach Jason ethics. And we’re off and running. Hopefully.
Favorite Moments & Lines
“First off, we fill his acoustic guitar with wet cat food!” Part of me wishes I was friends with Eleanor Shellstrop in real life just to hear her ridiculous ideas for revenge.
Tahani not knowing about a discount hotel package is peak Tahani. Plus, I think there’s more to her relationship with John and that it will be a key part of his development toward becoming a better person.
I’m sure you all also enjoyed Michael cowering while Eleanor cried. Chidi’s reaction to Michael exploding the vase was perfect.
