Grey’s Anatomy season 16 episode 2 review: Look at all the good men
By Meg Dowell
Grey’s Anatomy continues its 16th season with more character growth than we’ve seen in a while — and we couldn’t be happier.
Meredith may have found her “calling.” Bailey is going back to her sassy roots. Jo is standing up for herself. And Amelia is handling her drama with the maturity and grace we knew she was capable of all along. And it all happened because these women are strong, confident, and have the best supporters they could have asked for.
This week’s episode ofGrey’s Anatomy really changed the way I’ve been feeling about some of the gentlemen in our regular and recurring cast. Take Ben Warren, for example. His love for our girl Bailey totally kicked her back into Boss Mode. Now, instead of whining (I love her, but seriously), she’s back to her no-nonsense self. I’m here for it.
Heck, Thursday night even made me forget — for a few seconds — that I still really want to punch Jackson in the jaw. Despite how he has treated Maggie and their relationship as a whole (please keep them separated), he did stand up for Meredith, which was nice. He’s not a bad guy. He just… needs to not date anyone. Now or ever.
Speaking of Grey’s men that are frustratingly growing on me, DeLuca totally supported Meredith in her plans moving forward, and this gave me all the warm fuzzies. I don’t hate them together — I just never liked him from the beginning. But he’s being supportive, and sometimes that’s the best thing you can do for someone you care about.
It’s obvious that the show has been planning Meredith’s supposed next big endeavor for a while now — if she can’t practice medicine, there are plenty of other ways to help. Let’s not forget Ellis’ journals. Writing is in Mer’s blood. She could make a real difference.
Before I get to the best man of the night, let’s not forget about Meredith’s person. Alex is, as he has been for quite a while, a good person, and in this case, a very good partner to Jo. Offering her a job was a little awkward, but it did push her to stand up for herself — to Bailey, of all people — which is something she really needed to do. It’s time she gets her confidence back and focuses on doing the work she loves. She deserves it.
Now on to Link and Amelia. It didn’t even cross my mind that Link’s experiences with cancer as a child would make him apprehensive about having kids. But this was a bittersweet way to show just how good he is. He told Amelia he would support her and stick with her no matter what. He could have walked away, but he didn’t.
They are in this thing together, as they should be. I didn’t doubt for a second that he was going to stand by her no matter what. But for some minutes there, Amelia deciding not to keep the baby was a real and completely understandable possibility.
Obviously, regardless of her choice and whatever happens from this point forward, she has to do what’s best for her. There’s no arguing that. It is a sign of true growth, however, that she seems to want this to happen for real.
Honestly, this is good. It’s good for Amelia, who has really suffered enough at this point. And it’s good for us. Because if you’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy long enough, you know there are going to be plenty of bumps on this road. Enjoy the happy moments while they last.
For all we know, next week everything could fall apart in an instant.
