All the Things We Do in the Dark – Saundra Mitchell
This complicated YA thriller is being pitched as a combination of Sadie, Girl in Pieces and The Lovely Bones. All the Things We Do in the Dark follows the story of Ava, a 17-year-old girl who survived a horrific sexual trauma as a child and has spent the rest of her life trying to learn how to live with the aftereffects.
However, that’s not easy – she refuses to go anywhere without her mother or best friend, she avoids crowds and strangers, and gets a series of tattoos that help her cope. And when she becomes involved in a murder mystery, her own trauma and PTSD becomes almost unbearable.
The synopsis describes the story in dark, realistic terms.
"Something happened to Ava. The curving scar on her face is proof. Ava would rather keep that something hidden—buried deep in her heart and her soul. But in the woods on the outskirts of town, the traces of someone else’s secrets lie frozen, awaiting Ava’s discovery—and what Ava finds threatens to topple the carefully constructed wall of normalcy that she’s spent years building around her. Secrets leave scars. But when the secret in question is not your own—do you ignore the truth and walk away? Or do you uncover it from its shallow grave and let it reopen old wounds—wounds that have finally begun to heal?"
All the Things We Do in the Dark is available on October 29.
