7 things we learned during Disney’s Frozen 2 press event
Anna and Elsa have matured since the first film
Jennifer Lee emphasized during her opening speech that Elsa is a mythic figure with the weight of the world on her shoulder. This is in contrast to her sister Anna who, according to Marc Smith, director of story for the film, is “the ultimate optimist.” But Lee is quick to say that, unlike other mythological stories, Elsa isn’t a tragic figure so long as she has a family to balance everything out. In the three years since the events of the first film, both characters have matured, which left the animators deciding which character elements to retain and which to alter.
Anna’s animation supervisor, Hyun-Min Lee, discussed that there’s a role reversal between the two characters in this sequel. “Anna used to be the fearless one, forging ahead…and this time Elsa is the one being called into the unknown,” she said. “Anna is a little bit more worried and nervous for her sister’s safety.”
Now that there’s a family unit with Kristoff and Olaf, Anna “doesn’t want to see that bliss go away.”
