Popular period drama Poldark returns for its fifth and final season with a story that’s set to take us on a pretty big detour from Winston Graham’s novels.

It’s the end of an era – the final season of popular period drama Poldark begins tonight. And, as a result, we’ve got to start preparing our emotions to say goodbye to both the lovely Cornish countryside and this very melodramatic group of pretty people  who live there.

For once, though, we all have no idea precisely what’s coming this season, though.

Poldark’s final run of episodes are set in the ten-year gap between the seventh and eighth novels in author Winston Graham’s popular Poldark series. So, the show is kind of going off script a bit here, adding new characters and telling new stories rather than forcing the whole cast to pile on a bunch of aging make-up.

Kind of exciting, huh? (Though I have to admit, I was kind of looking forward to seeing star Aidan Turner with some fetching gray streaks in his hair.)

The official synopsis is pretty vague for a series that’s entering its last set of episodes.

"A plea for help from Ross’ old Army Colonel, Ned Despard, disturbs the Poldarks’ newfound peace. Demelza manages their affairs in Cornwall but encounters a new opponent. George struggles to engage with the world after Elizabeth’s death."

We already know that Ross will jump at any chance to help a friend in need, so that’s not surprising. But the prospect of Demelza getting a story of her own is pretty exciting.

And what about poor Morwenna, who finally got to marry her love Drake at the end of last season, but is still so traumatized by her abusive first husband that she can barely let him touch her? Or Dwight and Caroline, the best couple in Cornwall, who are still dealing with the loss of their daughter?

Will anyone get any joy? We’ll have to wait and see.
