Marvel and Sony reach an agreement: Spider-Man is back in the MCU!
After the recent debacle over Sony taking back the rights to Spider-Man, it seems the company has reached an agreement with Marvel — meaning our favorite hero will remain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After the success of Spider-Man: Far From Home — and the massive cliffhanger the film left off on — it came as quite a surprise to Marvel fans when Sony announced that it was taking back the rights to the comic hero, and that he wouldn’t be appearing in any more films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given how well received Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character has been, many fans were outraged by Sony’s and Disney’s failure to come to an agreement that kept him in the MCU’s next few phases. But there’s good news on that count.
According to Deadline, Sony and Walt Disney Studios Marvel have finally reached an agreement that both parties can live with, and they’ll be working on the third Spider-Man installment together, with Holland remaining in the lead role. The third film will likely follow Peter Parker in the wake of Mysterio revealing his identity at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home — and given that the villain pinned the drone strike on him, poor Peter is going to have a lot to cope with in the sequel.
The third film is reportedly scheduled to hit theaters in July 2021, and the deal between the companies also dictates that Holland’s Spider-Man will make an appearance in a future MCU film — meaning Spidey’s time collaborating with the Avengers team isn’t over just yet. And with so many new characters entering the foray — along with old ones, like Doctor Strange and Black Panther returning — there’s plenty of room to expand on Spider-Man’s story and weave it into the other heroes’.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, said in a statement. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Does that mean Holland could appear in Disney and Sony Spider-Man films? Because we are always here for more Spider-Man and more performances from Holland…
