Hulu cancels Ghost Rider, so where does that leave the show’s future?
Hulu has reportedly pulled the plug on Marvel’s Ghost Rider. But does that spell the end for the future of the show? Or will Robbie Reyes live to see another day?
Marvel’s Ghost Rider sounded like such a promising television show when it was announced by Hulu back in May. Bringing back Gabriel Luna to play the Robbie Reyes version of the character was a solid move, as his portrayal in Agents of SHIELD was a highlight of the fourth season.
Unfortunately, it sounds as though things have crashed and burned. Deadline reports that the show has been canceled due to a “creative impasse” —which is surprising because weeks ago in an interview with io9, Gabriel Luna spoke about the room of writers and the excitement for the show.
But that may not be the end of Robbie Reyes. Marvel may still decide to shop the show to other networks… or bring it to their Disney+ service, which is already full of other Marvel offerings.
Or… does this spell an even larger future for the character?
The future of the MCU looks to be more cosmic than its first decade. Who’s to say Ghost Rider isn’t on Kevin Feige’s short list of future films come Phase 5 or 6? This “falling out” could be more of a PR move than anything.
Needless to say, this probably isn’t the end of Ghost Rider. It takes a lot more than a streaming service to kill the Spirit of Vengeance.
But what does this mean for the future of everything else? Will Helstrom still get made on Hulu? That Deadline report says things are still on track, but that could change at a moment’s notice.
What about Cloak and Dagger, which finished its second season this past spring, or Marvel’s Runaways, which has a crossover episode this winter with Cloak and Dagger? Agents of SHIELD already has its end in sight, its final season airing in Summer 2020.
