It’s time to catch up with the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial and find out who still has a job (or not), who may have gotten promoted, and who might no longer be alive. Welcome back to Grey’s Anatomy!

It’s that time again, Grey’s Anatomy fans — time to have your hearts broken, put back together, and shattered all over again in the span of a single hour. On a weekly basis for the foreseeable future. Why do we do this to ourselves again? Oh, right. Because we crave the drama.

Season 15 ended in a whirlwind of all kinds of drama, uncertainty, sadness, joy, and baby cuteness. The finale seems like it aired forever ago, but it’s time to return to Seattle once again to have some (definitely not all) of our many questions answered.

If you need a quick refresher:

  • Alex, Richard, and Meredith were fired for their involvement in Meredith’s insurance fraud. DeLuca tried to take the fall for her, but Meredith wasn’t having it.
  • Teddy finally had Owen’s baby, after being pregnant for basically forever, and seems to have forgotten all about her boyfriend. Poor Tom.
  • Jo checked herself into inpatient treatment for her depression, finally admitting to Alex — and herself — that she couldn’t handle it all on her own.
  • Jackson and Maggie ended the season fighting (because when aren’t they fighting), but in the final moments of the episode, it’s implied something terrible has happened to him. Oh no!

With one final promotional preview comes all the questions — like, where is Richard? Are Tom and Owen going to battle it out over Teddy? And is Jackson going to die? Please don’t kill off Jackson. We like him.

Watch the preview here:

A lot is happening here — well, it’s Grey Sloan Memorial, what did you really expect? — so let’s break it down.

First, it looks like Meredith is finally facing the consequences of her illegal actions. At this point, most, if not all, the doctors on this show would have lost their licenses to practice medicine by now based on everything they’ve gotten away with over the last 15 seasons. It’s nice to see someone being held accountable for a major ethics violation. (Though how long that will last, we couldn’t possibly tell.)

CUTE BABY ALERT! And Sad Teddy alert. The new mom life apparently isn’t treating her well, which is going to put major pressure on her relationship with Owen — who is totally qualified to help by the way, since he does have his own baby, and is the father of hers. Mama drama incoming. We’re all here for it.

Also, Link and Amelia! What are they doing? Who knows! Chances are they’ll continue to stumble through it together, and we’ll watch hopeful that this girl finally catches a break and gets the long-lasting happiness she deserves.

In what might possibly be the most entertaining change-up this season, Catherine is about to grant Tom some major responsibilities over his fellow doctors. What happens when you give the surgeon with a god complex the equivalent of godly powers in a hospital setting? Chaos, probably. Hilarity, most definitely. We already feel bad for Owen. (Except not really, because the dynamic between these two is wonderful. Never let it die.)

Sadly, we’re going to see some major contrast between the more lighthearted moments, like Tom asserting his boss-ness over Owen and moments like the one we see here between Alex and Jo. Jo still isn’t OK. We’re not sure how her treatment is going at this point, and even less certain about her future with Alex. Fingers crossed they make it through this.

And finally, it appears we’re finally going to figure out where Jackson disappeared to at the very end of season 15. Last we saw him, he was walking into the fog — perhaps a metaphor for his future on the show, but we’ll get to that in a minute. Now there’s a search and rescue happening, and the preview at least wants us to believe he’s seriously injured and in danger of dying. NOT JACKSON. OH COME ON. He deserves better than this.

Grey’s has been trying to break its “someone always dies at the end of a season” formula the past few years. That doesn’t mean they won’t hesitate to kill off a major character at the beginning of a season instead.

As much as we would dearly miss Jesse Williams, his character’s death would give Maggie (his girlfriend/almost but not quite fiancé) some more room to grow. Nothing against her, but character development is necessary, and she might need a bit of a boost.

Wow, that’s a lot to take in. Just imagine how we’re all going to feel after this thing is over tonight. Can’t wait to “see” you there!
