Harry Potter: Am I the only Harry/Ginny shipper? Sure feels like it
I’ve shipped Harry and Ginny since before they were even a thing on Harry Potter, but increasingly it feels like I’m the only one who still ships them.
I got into Harry Potter in the endless period between books four and five. In a way, I was lucky, because I got to devour four books together, and in many ways, I wasn’t, because then I had to sit down and wait for what felt like forever (but was actually just under three years) for book five to come out.
Those were the golden days of the Harry Potter fandom, the days of speculating, fanfiction and fanart galore, and of course, ship wars.

Now, I argued my point more than once, because I do love arguing, but even back then, I remember getting tired of the dispute really easily. It felt, after all, pretty simple to me. You like what you like, and no one is going to convince you of liking something else, no matter how many good points that person makes.
Plus, there was always the fact that I was pretty sure I knew where JKR was going, ship wise.
It turned out I was right; she was always planning to do Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny. Not that canon, one way or another, changed people’s minds. They still liked what they liked, and that was perfectly fine.
Except for the fact that I like Harry/Ginny. Not past tense, like. I still do. In fact, they might just be my favorite Harry Potter couple.

Maybe it’s because I love the Harry-actually-becoming-part-of-the-family trope. Perhaps because Book Ginny (don’t talk to me about Movie Ginny, I don’t know her) is one of my favorite literary characters ever. Perhaps because it always felt to me like what Harry needed wasn’t someone who kept him in line, but someone who encouraged him to live a little more.
Or maybe because I just like them, and that’s it. Sometimes shipping has no explanation – needs no explanation.
But it’s a lonely world out here, shipping Harry and Ginny. I often feel like I’m the only one. I know I can’t really be, though. Where are you, my shipmates? Identify yourselves!
