When it comes to LGBTQI artist areté, music is a chance to take a mental health journey through a toxic relationship. And with the single “Trip,” they do just that.

Music is the way many of us express ourselves and share our stories. And artists such as areté do that in a way that is captivating and electrifying.

With areté’s single, “Trip,” listeners are treated to an intensely moving piece that is just as catchy as it is trippy. And the music video for the song is just as impressive, with visuals that offer a look at multiple personality disorder in a more concrete manner. Of course, in the video it is clear that areté has been pushed to this point by a relationship gone wrong, but at the same time, there is something stunningly visceral about the imagery in this piece.

While the video is described as being a parallel to a hallucinogenic trip, it also feels especially accurate as a representation of the different moods and feelings associated with unique personalities.

As a listener, areté’s “Trip” is a brilliant single that captures the attention with its electro-pop beats and lyrics that call to the mind on an intellectual level. I am all for falling down a rabbit hole and visuals that can inspire, and one can’t help but feel like that is exactly what we get with this video — and song in general.

According to areté, “Nearly every woman and queer person I know has been in a relationship with someone who controlled them, whose needs became more important than their own, who destabilized and, in truth, emotionally, if not physically, abused them.” And with “Trip,” the singer chooses to offer an alternative to the abuse. This is a chance to remind anyone dealing with a toxic relationship that you can take command of yourself and your voice.

As someone who identifies as androgynous, as well as non binary, areté is giving voice to others in a way that is electrifying. And as we wait for their upcoming EP, Cassandra, we can’t help but hope for more singles that are not only a chance to empower others, but that also feature the catchy beats and inspiring lyrics.
