If you’re looking for a rom-com to escape into for a few hours, Rosie Nixon’s The Stylist Takes Manhattan might be the perfect book for you.

Sometimes readers just need to escape into a book that’s lighthearted and comical, and Rosie Nixon’s The Stylist Takes Manhattan is the perfect read to suit that purpose. Following London-based stylist Amber Green, the novel chronicles her journey to New York, where she attempts to mingle with celebrities and push her fashion career forward — all while dealing with her own insecurities about herself and her relationship.

And Amber’s insecurities quickly rise to the surface as she has obstacle after obstacle thrown her way. The glamorous fashion realm of New York can be cut-throat, and even the people who claim they want to help her can quickly turn into frenemies instead. She’ll need to be persisent if she wants to rise to the top of the industry, and she’ll certainly need more than a promising social media presence to do it.

Watching Amber learn the ins and outs of New York’s fashion industry is probably the most compelling part of this book, and reading her story feels a bit like watching a particularly flashy reality television show. And to add to the reality TV element, there’s also plenty of drama on the personal side of Amber’s life too.

Not only does Amber’s best friend Vicky show up on her doorstep following an unexpected breakup, but her boyfriend Rob winds up questioning whether moving to New York together was truly a good idea in the first place. Although arguments with the people she’s closest to are the last thing Amber needs, that’s exactly what she finds herself wrapped up in while she’s navigating her new home.

The side characters are what makes The Stylist Takes Manhattan truly feel like a reality drama, and truthfully, it’s hard to genuinely take to most of them. They’re deeply flawed, as is Amber, and that fact makes the story feel that much more authentic. Of course, Amber’s love interest probably won’t appeal to every reader. But what’s the fun of relationship drama if you’re not rooting for one side more than the other?

Still, if you’re looking for a fun romp through the lives of the rich and glamorous of New York, The Stylist Takes Manhattan is a book you’ll want to add to your TBR pile. It’s a fun, escapist read that will engulf you in its pages until the story comes to an end.
