Darkdawn – Jay Kristoff

The highly anticipated conclusion to author Jay Kristoff’s bestselling and wildly popular Nevernight Chronicles series finally arrives this September. And it promises to be everything fans have wanted and more.

At the end of Kristoff’s previous novel, Godsgrave, assassin Mia Corvere believed that she killed her power-hungry nemesis Julius Scaeva. But, unfortunately for her, that’s not exactly true. Particularly since she kidnapped his son, who happens to actually be Jonnen, the brother she’d thought she’d lost forever. (Just go with it, folks.) And also because everyone thinks Mia is a murderer now, thanks to her violent performance at the gladiatti arena. Put all of that together, and she’s on the run from virtually everybody.

Mia and her friends must cross both treacherous seas and wastelands to reach the place where her life as an assassin began, the Red Church. And though she still wants a life of peace and a future without bloodshed, but it’s beginning to look a lot like she might never get it.

A book like Darkdawn is kind of difficult to discuss without giving away too much, which is likely why its official synopsis describes the series’ conclusion in fairly basic terms, which makes sense given that it likely has a lot of secrets to keep.

"The Republic of Itreya is in chaos. Mia Corvere has assassinated Cardinal Duomo and rumors of Consul Scaeva’s death ripple through the street of Godsgrave like wildfire. But buried beneath those same streets, deep in the ancient city’s bones, lies a secret that will change the Republic forever. Mia and her brother Jonnen must journey through the depths of the ancient metropolis. Their quest will take them through the Godsgrave underdark, across the Sea of Swords, back to the library of the Quiet Mountain and the poisoned blades of Mia’s old mentors, and at last the fabled Crown of the Moon. There, Mia will at last discover the origins of the darkin, and learn the destiny that lies in store for her and her world. But with the three suns now in descent, and Truedark on the horizon, will she survive?"

Darkdawn is available on September 3.
