The Ten Thousand Doors of January –  Alix E. Harrow

Alix E. Harrow’s fantastical debut novel The Ten Thousand Doors of January mixes books, impossible journeys, secret doors to magical, faraway lands and much more.

The story follows January Seller, a young girl living at the turn of the 20th century on the estate of a very rich man named Cornelius Locke, who employs her father Julian to scour the word for priceless objects and treasures for him.

When she was just seven years old, January found a Door, which she was convinced opened into another world. And though she forgot about her brief brush with this gateway for years, it becomes painfully relevant again when she turns 17, her father disappears, and she discovers a book that will change her life.

The book, entitled The Ten Thousand Doors, lets her know that such fantastical gateways are real, and tells her about where some of them lead. It also contains the story of a young girl named Adelaide, whose tale sounds eerily similar to January’s own.

The official synopsis describes the story as follows.

"In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own."

The Ten Thousand Doors of January is available on September 10.
