Lady and the Tramp

This might be wrong to say, but I’m not the biggest fan of the Disney animated feature Lady and the Tramp. The 1955 movie has its moments — “Bella Notte” is definitely cute — but I’ve never been able to conjure up much interest in the movie, maybe because I saw it as an adult and not a kid. So when Disney’s announcement came that this would be its next live-action remake, it made sense. There’s an entire industry made up of movies about live animals doing things, so maybe this would finally capture what Lady and the Tramp had failed to give me.

The movie will follow the same path as the original, with upper-crust spaniel Lady (here voiced by Tessa Thompson) living a life of happiness until her owners (played by Kiersey Clemons and Thomas Mann) have a new baby. Feeling lonely, Lady goes out into the world and meets the free-spirited Tramp (voiced by Justin Theroux). The two meet other dogs, try to elude the dog catcher, and fall in love over a plate of spaghetti and meatballs.

The trailer has that Disney feel, even if it’s always going to be awkward to watch animals have their mouths mimicking dialogue. But it’s hard to pass up a movie that has Tessa Thompson, — Valkeryie herself — and Justin Theroux voicing dogs who fall in love. I go where they go!
