Muppets Now

The Muppets still haven’t found their footing since Disney bought them in 2004. In 2011, they came back to the big screen with a movie and won Best Original Song for “Man or Muppet.” A sequel in 2014 called Muppets Most Wanted didn’t seem to get the most fervid response (though I maintain it’s a ton of fun with some great songs).

My heart, though, will always belong to the 2015 attempt to bring the Muppets back to television with (again) The Muppets. The Muppets was a sitcom/mockumentary looking at the felted friends navigating the real world after their days of success are over. The first episode caught flack for its adult humor, and the show was overhauled with a completely new behind-the-scenes cast to make it a bit more family friendly. After just 16 episodes, the show was canceled.

Thankfully, the studio is willing to give the Muppets another shot with Muppets Now. There’s not much known about the series, short of it being an unscripted show. A brief teaser saw Kermit the Frog being legally barred from discussing anything that could indicate how new this idea is. It’s possible that Muppets Now will be similar to another Disney+ series, Forky Asks a Question, and be small vignettes that you can watch. I’d personally love a regular series with a plot, but I’ll take the Muppets however I can get them.
