Lizzie McGuire 2.0

In 2001 the Walt Disney Company created a new take on the teenage girl with Lizzie McGuire. The eponymous character, played with tenacity and fun by Hilary Duff, was a 13-year-old girl who had aspirations of popularity, finding a boyfriend and rocking an incredibly dated (now) wardrobe. With her friends Miranda and Gordo, and her animated conscious along for the ride, Lizzie realized she could take on anything.

Lizzie McGuire kicked off the era of Disney programming that would become indelible to millennial viewers, so when Disney+ announced plans for a reboot there was immediate skepticism. Would we be seeing a new actress playing a different take on the same character? Nope, Disney+ revealed that Duff was set to reprise her role, alongside the original show’s creator Terri Minsky. As Duff herself explained, Lizzie would be dealing with the same issues she faced as a teenager, albeit with the addition of a job and more complications from a relationship. This new Lizzie is living in New York and seems to have things down, but her animated conscious (who is still thirteen) is still there to stir up trouble.

This new Lizzie McGuire certainly sounds like it would belong on Disney’s young adult channel Freeform, but it makes sense to be here. The question is who else from the original show will return? What happened to Miranda and Gordo in those subsequent years? How does Lizzie manage to live in New York City on a salary that’s probably determined by the gig economy (I’m guessing)? Lizzie McGuire was always grounded in reality, so it will be interesting to see whether Disney goes for adult fantasy or not.
