What Hermione Granger means to the bookworm in all of us, even now
For many of us, we looked to Hermione Granger as someone we could be and weren’t afraid to be the avid readers or good students we wanted to be and we owe a lot to her.
Hermione Granger started off as the annoying girl in Harry and Ron’s class that they hated but, as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone went on, they realized that they needed Hermione and thus a beautiful friendship was formed for the three. But while Harry and Ron had to learn to love Hermione, many of us clung to her the minute she showed up on the page.
Why? Because we saw ourselves in her. A girl who wanted to learn and be the smartest one in the class, she just wanted to prove herself over and over again, no matter the cost. And, for many of us, especially those young female readers, we saw Hermione as a symbol that we didn’t have to hide behind this façade of what we thought the world wanted to see of us.
If we wanted to sit there and read books and talk about them over and over again, we should without question. If we wanted to be the best we could be and prove to all the boys in class that we were smart and determined, we should be able to do that too. And that confidence, that determination, came, for a lot of us, from Hermione and her willingness to stand up for what she wanted to do and what she believed in and we owe her a lot of gratitude.
