Harry Potter and the current political climate: Why we continue to compare the two

facebooktwitterreddit

Sure, politics were only a small part of the original Harry Potter series but there is a reason that many fans have taken to comparing the series to the current political climate.

Harry Potter has always had political undertones, that’s why the Death Eaters joined Voldemort and so on and so forth. But still, with the way our world is now, so geared towards politically charged imagery, it isn’t surprising that many Potter fans compare characters to the people we see in our daily lives.

Most recently, the comparisons between Elizabeth Warren and Minerva McGonagall surfaced and it helped confirm the idea that fans have of these characters and how they relate to those politicians currently in the mainstream conversation. We see so many of them and want to simplify them by using Harry Potter characters and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

For many of us, it is how we understand something. We have come to know these characters so intimately that we just get them and their importance to the Harry Potter series. So, taking those ideas and applying them to real life people we see and are trying to understand makes sense. A man who dreams of making the world a better place? Bernie is a bit like Dumbledore.

There’s already been the Trump/Voldemort comparisons and so much comes back to our love and understanding of this series. Is it fair? Probably not but there is a reason why many continue to compare this series to things going on in our real lives.
