Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
Kicking off our list is a short-lived BBC America series that gained a small but loyal following when it aired in 2016. Based on the Douglas Adams novel of the same name, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency follows down-on-his-luck hotel employee Todd Brotzmann (Elijah Wood) as his world is turned upside down due to a chance encounter with an eccentric private detective named Dirk Gently. Together, along with professional Ass-kicker Farah Black, Dirk and Todd embark on a mystery filled to the brim with superpowers, government clones, time travel, body-swapping, and energy-sucking vampires.
Like many entries on this list, Dirk Gently is definitely a little more violent than the squeaky-clean CW Legends, but don’t let that deter you. It has the same spirit that Legends does – an unashamed sense of weirdness where nothing is too bizarre to be off the table. Dirk Gently also has its share of well-written, strong female characters (just like Legends), and while it does have a more overarching plot as opposed to week-by-week adventures, it’s still very much a sci-fi comedy.
If you’re thinking about giving Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency a try, it’s available on Hulu, iTunes, and Amazon Prime Video.
