The Politician trailer offers a hilarious take on modern politics

Netflix’s The Politician already had a star-studded lineup to boast of, but the first official trailer for the series also suggests that it will deliver a comically accurate depiction of politics.

With stars like Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow involved, Netflix’s upcoming series, The Politician, already had a star-studded cast to boast of. But the streaming service dropped the first trailer for the show yesterday, and it looks like the cast isn’t the only thing The Politician has going for it. In addition to its acting talent, the series offers viewers a hilariously accurate portrayal of the modern political sphere — and all through the story of a high school election.

In the trailer, Ben Platt plays Payton Hobart, a high school student who has known since childhood that he’s destined to become the president of the United States. And he’s getting his political experience early by running for student body president of Saint Sebastian High School. As it turns out, the political sphere of an elite high school has some striking similarities the national one.

And it looks like the series will be taking those likenesses and highlighting them, all in the name of poking fun at modern elections. The trailer opens with Payton’s friends obsessing over Twitter popularity polls and internet appearances, and it goes on to call out “cancel culture” when Payton’s running mate is accused of using the word “buttmunch” as a slur.

If all this sounds ridiculous, it’s because it is. And it doesn’t look like either side of the political playing field will be safe from The Politician‘s humor. That said, the series will be a perfect way to lighten up the  tensions of the upcoming election, which is sure to be more intense and heated than ever. But at least we can kick back after the debates with a show that laughs at it all — because if we don’t laugh, we’ll probably just cry.

The Politician will be available to stream on Netflix beginning on September 27.
