Ewan McGregor in talks to reprise his role as Obi-Wan in a Disney+ series

Only a Sith deals in absolutes, but we’re absolutley over the moon that Ewan McGregor is in talks  return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney+ miniseries.

Though the current Star Wars trilogy will come to an end with December’s Rise of the Skywalkerthe extended universe is only just beginning. We’ll have to wait a few years for another Star Wars movie to hit theaters, but some recent casting news has us more excited than ever about one of the Disney+ series that will fill the void in the movies’ absence.

The first, entitled The Mandalorian, is a series starring Pedro Pascal and created by Jon Favreau. There’s already a full cast and crew, and a trailer is expected some time within the next week. The second, however, was announced earlier this year to be a series following Obi-Wan Kenobi. And according to new information, Ewan McGregor is in talks to reprise his role in the upcoming Disney+ miniseries.

If you’re not familiar, McGregor first took on the role in the notorious Star Wars prequel trilogy, where he played the younger, quippier version of Alec Guinness’ Ben Kenobi. Though the prequels themselves have a somewhat tumultuous legacy, McGregor’s performance was an instantly iconic portrayal that was an inarguable highlight of the trilogy.

Given that Ben Kenobi meets his fate during A New Hope, it’s pretty safe to say that this hypothetical miniseries would take place some time between the end of the prequels, and the beginning of the original trilogy. Narratively, our best guess is that the series would fill in the blanks of how Obi-Wan came to assume the identity of Ben Kenobi, and why he took up residence on Tattoine.

Though everything is still very much up in the air, we can’t help but get excited at the prospect of seeing one of Star Wars‘ most well-loved characters return to our screens.
