Vow of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

The second novel in Mary E. Pearson’s Dance of Thieves spin-off series also hit shelves on August 6. Unlike many of the other novels on this list, Vow of Thieves begins its story on a high note. Following the events of the previous novel, Kazi and Jase have survived and seemingly found their happy ending. The two are deeply in love, and the future ahead of them looks promising.

But unfortunately, the two receive a warning on the way back to the kingdom of Tor’s Watch that threatens to destroy all of their happiness and hopes for the future. And in their rush to return, the two are caught off guard and ambushed. They find themselves separated by their enemies, each thrown into a fresh new nightmare.

And if either of them is to survive, Kazi and Jase must keep their heads among their enemies — even if they have no idea whether or not the other one survived. The two continue to work toward their freedom, but there’s also another problem: Death is waiting.

Pearson’s sequel sounds likely to break fans’ hearts, especially after teasing the promise of happiness for our characters at the end of Dance of Thieves and the beginning of Vow of Thieves. It’ll be interesting to see how Kazi and Jase cope with the new obstacles thrown their way — and to find out if they can survive them.
