Song of the Abyss by Makiia Lucier

Makiia Lucier began her Tower of Winds series last year with Isle of Blood and Stone, and this summer she’s continuing the adventure in Song of the Abyss. This sequel will follow Renya, the 17-year-old granddaughter of a famous navigator. Renya’s dream is to become a Master Explorer, and she’s determined to do so — even if most people insist this isn’t a suitable path for a girl.

Renya’s plans come to a halt, however, when her ship is raided by a dangerous group. She barely escapes the assault, but her captain and crew disappear entirely. The whole situation is bizarre and suspicious, and Renya sets out to uncover the truth behind what occurred. Her discoveries point to a kingdom to the north, but she’ll need to have courage when facing what awaits her there.

She’ll also need to accept the help of a prince from a rival nation if she’s to succeed in finding out where her crew went. While she’s not eager to place her trust in him, readers can sense the possibility of a slow-burn romance just from the synopsis.

With romance, mystery, and even a bit of politics, Song of the Abyss offers everything readers could want from a fantasy story. It comes out on August 27, and it’s a promising way to end the month — and the summer — on a high note when it comes to reading.
