Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Is Coulson’s return a possibility?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD opened up the possibility that Sarge may be harboring a bit of Coulson in him. Will the team be able to resurrect him?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD ends its sixth season this week with back-to-back episodes and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
But let’s forget about the world-saving stuff for a moment and focus more on the emotional stakes. In last week’s episode, Daisy interrogated Sarge. That’s a nice way to put it–she snapped his neck so he could regenerate and his “true form” could emerge.
She’s almost ready to end him for good in the hallway as he wrecks the SHIELD base when he tells her to kill him. And then calls her Skye.
It’s an affecting scene, especially watching Chloe Bennet‘s performance and the range of emotions that dance across her face in a handful of seconds. The idea that Coulson is still in there, even if it’s some sliver of him… that’s too tempting to follow.
But the team will follow it anyway.
So I am here to play Devil’s Advocate. Can Coulson be salvaged from inside Sarge? And, to add to that, is it worth the risk of the planet to possibly get back the deceased Director of SHIELD?
We learned in our time loop last year from Elena that the team wasted too much time trying to save Coulson and the world quaked apart. The team would be very dumb to do something similar barely a year later.
They don’t know for sure if Coulson is still in there somewhere, or if he can even be separated from whatever Sarge truly is. That risk doesn’t feel worth it, especially since Coulson would make the sacrifice play anyway and take himself out of the picture long before anyone could save him, so long as it keeps the world safe in the process.
And even if the team does somehow manage to extract Coulson from Sarge, it’s his consciousness and memories that existed at a certain point in time. It won’t be the same Coulson as before. Is that enough for the team?
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD‘s season finale premieres Friday, August 2nd at 8pm EST.
