HBO’s His Dark Materials got its first trailer during San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Take a look inside the series penned by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child author, Jack Throne.

At first glance, there may not seem to be much in the way of Harry Potter connections with HBO’s upcoming new series His Dark Materials. That is until you look at the writer. Jack Throne, the writer of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, penned the fantasy TV series. The first trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and it’s time to take a look inside the series.

For those who haven’t heard, His Dark Materials is a series based on the novels by Phillip Pullman. If you think you’ve seen the series somewhere before, you probably have. There’s already been an attempted movie franchise on the book series, starting with The Golden Compass. Unfortunately, the movie flopped, but HBO and BBC are hoping that won’t be the case with this series.

More from Harry Potter

The trailer introduces fans to the main characters of the series. One of those is Dafne Keen’s Lyra, the young girl who is central to the storyline. When she discovers a plot that involves stolen children, she decides to head off on an adventure to save them.

James McAvoy is certainly one of the main actors fans will recognize in His Dark Materials. He’ll play Lord Asriel, Lyra’s uncle who happens to be an adventurer. Ruth Wilson steps in as Marisa Coulter, a woman who takes Lyra under her wing. Then there’s Lin-Manuel Mirana, who plays the balloonist Lee Scoresby, who helps Lyra go on her epic adventure.

Fans also got a chance to see the various daemons, animals that are actually the souls of people living outside their bodies. And the polar bear? This is Lorek Byrnison and an extremely important part of the store. Those who have seen The Golden Compass will know more, but I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t seen it or read the books.

This is a big-budget TV series and certainly something for Harry Potter fans out there. If not for the writer, it will offer a similar feel with magic, mystery, and adventure.
