Sirius Black and the shaggy dog that never got his chance at happiness
He may have been wrongfully imprisoned but Sirius Black’s life was tragic long before Peter Pettigrew threw his former friend under the bus to support Lord Voldemort.
Sirius Black is a tragic character, there’s no question about it. But him going to prison for something he didn’t do is just the icing on the cake. Long before Peter Pettigrew came into his life and threw him under the bus, Sirius was faced with a family who didn’t care about him.
He struggled, hated those who raised him and it wasn’t until he met James Potter and was accepted into his family did Sirius ever really have a chance at being happy. That’s what makes his death so sad. Sirius just wanted his best friend back, wanted to be back in the days when he could rely on James Potter and be there for him in return. Instead, we see a man who has been through so much and is left without his friend to turn to.
Yes, he has Lupin. But his relationship with James was different. James Potter was the one who helped get Sirius Black away from his family and so to see him stuck away from his friend, lost in the world and trying to be there for James’s son? It’s wonderful and sad all at the same time.
Sirius Black was always going to be there for Harry Potter in whatever way he could but that doesn’t mean that it was easy for him to look at the only bit of James left in the world.
