James Potter and the idea that a character can learn to grow and change

In the eyes of Harry Potter, James Potter was a seemingly good man but the more he learned about his dad, the more he learned about his past and we can see how people can grow.

James Potter wasn’t great when he was in Hogwarts. That much is clear by just looking at his track record of friends and how they treated Severus Snape. Even though Snape has his problems, that doesn’t mean he isn’t someone that should be tortured in school.

Still, the James we saw as an adult was more willing to put his life on the line to stop Voldemort and would do anything to protect his family. While it is proof that having a family can change the way people view the world, it also is proof that people have the ability to change. James Potter would never have fought as he did when he was in school. Or if he did, it would only be because he thought it was cool. But as an adult, he was ready to do what was right for the wizarding world and that is the character we all fell in love with.

So yeah, he wasn’t great when he was a teenager but who really is? Even Harry Potter has his moments when acts like a teenage boy instead of the hero that the world, seemingly, needs. So does Harry Potter not be a hero because of that? No. And so James Potter, through all his quirks, is still a hero, at least to his family, for sacrificing himself to try and save his wife and child.
