Big Little Lies review: Is everyone in Monterey in on what the women did?
It may have seen as if the Monterey Five were the only ones who really knew what happened on Big Little Lies, but that may not be the case after all.
Big Little Lies is all about hiding secrets. Sure, season 1 was about Perry Wright and Celeste’s biggest secret most of all. But every character as their truths to hide. From the start of this season, we’ve seen each woman come to terms with something they’ve done from the past. It doesn’t have to be in regards to Perry. Sometimes it is even something like Madeline Mackenzie being held responsible for her actions against Ed.
On this week’s episode, though, we can see that all of the kids clearly know what’s going on while their parents are still a mess. From Max and Josh fighting against some kid bullying Ziggy to Chloe going and hugging her father without anyone telling her to do it, each of these kids are aware of something going on and they’re all trying to do what they need to do to be the best for their parents.
It seems as though everyone’s problems are no longer just about what happened to Perry Wright. Sure, that is a looming threat on the horizon, but everyone has bigger things to worry about. Renata is going bankrupt because of her husband, Madeline’s life is falling apart right before her eyes, Bonnie is trying to be there for her mother, and Celeste is fighting against Mary Louise at every turn.
The only one who seems okay is Jane, and that is still falling apart too because she’s still coping with her rape while trying to start a new relationship with Corey. But, what we learned from this week’s episode, is that that is going to be changing.
Jane and Corey have been spending a lot of time together, Jane confiding in him and telling him about how Ziggy was conceived. So why then was he at the police department? We don’t know anything about the situation, just that Bonnie saw him there when she was going to, presumably, tell the police the truth.
That’s not all that’s bad in Monterey, though. The women have to plan to go on the stand to defend Celeste because Mary Louise is fighting for custody of her twins despite the fact that Celeste is a fine mother. She wants the boys for herself and is using the excuse of Celeste’s mental health to try and take them away from her.
She gets offered a deal where Mary Louise would get to take them on the weekends (which still isn’t fair because she’s not their mother) but with the threat of a court case coming against her, all the women realize that they have to lie under oath about what happened to Perry and it is weighing heavily on them.
So, what does this all mean? Who knows, but it seems that things are heating up in Monterey and not everything is going to be a simple lie anymore.
Also, can we talk about why they cut Madeline throwing ice cream at Mary Louise? What did we do to deserve that?
