The important thing to remember about a patronus is that they are built from happy memories
Harry Potter didn’t have too many happy members for his patronus and he still had to use them frequently which is brings up the idea of happy memories and a patronus, what does it mean?
A patronus isn’t always easy to conjure. Why? Because you have to recall a happy memory in order for it to be strong. And that’s what is so interesting about them. The best way to combat a dementor is with a happy memory, targeting them with the thoughts they want to try and take away from you.
When you stop and think about it, it makes a patronus one of the hardest spells to cast. Have you ever tried to think of a particularly happy memory without thinking about it? It’s hard. So to do so in order to save your life cannot be an easy task. Especially for someone like Harry Potter, who has, more often than not, faced hard times instead of happy memories.
So the amount of times he managed to us his patronus while still in school is impressive. But it also makes us ask ourselves what memories we would conjure up to help ourselves succeed against a dementor. Thinking back to a toy you got or some other little happy memory isn’t enough. You have to be able to find a memory that truly made you feel joy and use it and that can’t be easy.
Clearly ,the witches and wizards of Hogwarts have managed to succeed in doing so time and time again but it is fun for us to think about!
