Understanding the fear that Lord Voldemort inflicted upon readers of the Potter series
Voldemort may be Harry Potter’s foe but that doesn’t mean that we weren’t afraid of him when we were first reading the series as children. So here’s why we fear the Dark Lord.
Lord Voldemort wasn’t just scary to the kids in the Harry Potter series, he was frightening to us all. Not only did we have to live with the knowledge that Harry was going to have to fight him and it could result in his death. Granted, we know now that that kind of happened but also that Harry Potter went on to live a full life but then, we didn’t.
We only had the fear of what Voldemort could inflict on everyone. And with that, we had to watch as our favorite characters either followed him and his terrible views or were in danger of being killed by him. So yes, our fear of Tom Marovolo Riddle’s reign isn’t unwarranted and even now, as adults, we still fear him because we knew what he represented in the series.
There is maybe something in us that takes us back to being kids and reading the series for the first time that makes us still afraid of Lord Voldemort but whatever it is, we always will have this fear ingrained in us because that’s what the series taught us we have to fear. And maybe that’s a good thing and why we’re so questioning of the bad people in the world because we grew up with Voldemort haunting a lot of what we were reading and the world we wanted to be a part of.
