Drama in the Harry Potter series: How the stakes are different than in other dramas

Sometimes, a series needs just that little bit of extra magical bits to make the stakes a bit higher and Harry Potter sure does have a lot he’s fighting against in the series.

Whenever there are higher stakes in a series, it tends to hold us a bit more than something that is just a family drama and the Harry Potter series has quite a lot of stakes for us all to cling to. Basically, anything Harry does isn’t just against himself but also against the entire fate of the world. Mainly because he’s supposed to save everyone in his life at any turn.

Harry has his friends, he has those connected to his parents, and he has those he never even met that he has to save because that’s the fate he was given. Which isn’t a bad thing, it just means that we get to experience the series on the edge of our seats.

At every turn, Harry had to face something that would mean he ran the risk of ruining everything for the world if he failed, which is a terrible thing for a teenager to go through. And sure, there are series with risks just like this but there is something tragic about Harry’s entire life, apart from his need to save the world.

He suffered at every turn and for what end? So Voldemort wouldn’t win but Harry would lose everything? That isn’t really fair to him but still, he was our hero and did everything he could. So yes, a series needs stakes but it almost seems as if the Harry Potter series had too many.
