Fear The Walking Dead’s female characters are bringing it this season. Here are some of their best moments in episode 503 “Humbug’s Gulch”.

The women of Fear The Walking Dead are fierce fighters perfectly capable of defending themselves and the people they love, just like the women on The Walking Dead. But they also have the strength to be emotionally vulnerable and that’s sometimes more difficult than being physically strong.

After the tumultuous events of season 4 where Alicia lost Nick and her mom, Luciana lost Nick, and June was grappling with her past and almost didn’t reunite with John Dorie they’re still processing everything that they’ve been through.

Even though it might be easier to just shut down emotionally and become mere killing machines all of the women on Fear The Walking Dead are taking their bravery to the next level by living through their grief and trauma and not hiding what they’re going through.

They’re using the fear, anger, and grief from trauma to make them stronger, to inspire those around them, and to fulfill their mission to help others trying to find redemption for themselves. In “Humbug’s Gulch” the women of Fear The Walking Dead dig deep to use their emotional strength as well as their physical strength to try to build trust with and help newcomers.

Here are five best moments from “Humbug’s Gulch” that portrayed the strength and bravery of Fear‘s female characters.

Luciana has no regrets

When Luciana and Alicia are taking a bit of a break from dismantling the walker blockades across the road, Luciana admits she can’t feel anything in her injured arm. Despite this, she has no regrets about what happened and that she would do it again, even with the same outcome, because together they are taking action to try to help people.

As long as they keep trying, they are keeping the legacies of those they love alive. Luciana’s ability to stay committed to the cause of helping people even when it has disastrous and unforeseen consequences makes her a badass, as much as her ability to kill walkers does.

Alicia won’t give up on helping Dylan, Max, and Annie

It would be easy for Alicia to walk away and forget about those kids. They don’t really want any help from the group and they haven’t been very forthcoming with information. But Alicia can’t let it go, because she knows her mom would never let it go.

Alicia feels like she owes it to her mother to keep going and to protect kid. It’s similar to how her mom protected Charlie. Thus, she isn’t going to stop trying to help the three siblings until there’s no way left that she can help. She senses that the kids are afraid of something much bigger than the group has encountered before and she’s not going to rest until she knows the kids are safe.

June shoots a man and talks him out of suicide

When Dwight threatens to shoot John Dorie, demanding to know where Sherry is, June drops Dwight neatly with a shot to the arm. But then she went into nurse mode and cleaned him up and patched up the wound.

Later on, when Dwight was ready to give up and commit suicide because of his despair at not being able to find Sherry, June was the one to tell him the truths he needed to hear. When John cautioned her to be careful about what she said to Dwight she told John that Dwight needed to hear what she was going to say.

Apparently he did, because Dwight pulled himself out of his dark place and accepted John and June’s help to get free from the car surrounded by walkers and get back to them. June’s ability to do whatever has to be done is rare in the apocalypse world and it is what makes her such a valuable addition to the group.

Alicia lays it on the line for the kids

It was tough not to get emotional as Alicia bared her heart to the kids on the walkie to let them know she could be trusted and really wanted to help them. Alicia told the kids that she wouldn’t tell them it gets easier to lose your family.  She’s still struggling with it and she knows what they’re feeling.

While a speech like that might have sounded fake coming from anyone else Alicia’s raw emotion was authentic and anyone listening to her speak knew she was being real with them. It takes a lot of bravery to be that open about your pain. Alicia won’t back away from her pain the way she won’t back away from a fight. Just like Madison.

Sherry won’t give up on Dwight

The absent Sherry needs to get an honorable mention here for never giving up on Dwight. Sherry double crossed Negan and took off rather than live as one of his forced into marriage wives. She left everything and everyone that was familiar to go on the run and has never stopped leaving messages for Dwight hoping he will find her.

To live with that uncertainty and never give up hope while still making a life for yourself is something only someone with a vast amount of inner strength can do. Hopefully Sherry will appear at some point to join the group because she would be a great addition.
