The 100: Clarke faces Josephine and her past in “Nevermind”

This week’s episode shows Clarke and Josephine fighting for control of their mind — and revisiting Clarke’s past decisions in the process.

Clarke’s fight was supposed to be over, but fans of The 100 know there’s truth behind the statement that she “doesn’t go down easy.” Even after Russell and Simone Lightbourne wiped her mind, part of Clarke remained in a separate mental space that was created when Josephine Lightbourne took control of it.

But Josephine discovers Clarke’s mind space on this week’s episode of The 100, leading to a face off between the two of them that could only end one way — with one of them exiting Clarke’s body forever. Unfortunately, that makes the stakes far higher for Clarke than for Josephine.

And as the two of them fight for control of their now-joined brain, Clarke revisits some of the major moments from her past — and the series — with appearances from her father, Octavia, Maya, and even Monty. After all, Clarke’s been carrying plenty of baggage from her past decisions. Being thrown into her own thoughts and memories forces her to confront the things she’s done, from killing everyone inside of Mount Weather to leaving Bellamy in Wonkru’s fighting pits.

With all of that to contend with, it’s no wonder that Josephine temporarily convinces Clarke to give up the fight for her body. It’s understandable that Wanheda might want to retire, especially when the other girl promises that her sacrifice will keep Madi, Bellamy, and the others alive and on amicable terms with the Primes.

Luckily, Monty — or more accurately, Clarke’s memory of Monty, since this is all happening inside Clarke’s head — appeals to her survival instincts. He tells her that this isn’t what he meant when he told her to be one of the “good guys,” and that she can’t sit aside while the Primes continue to kill innocent for the sake of immortality.

And although “Nevermind” ends with Josephine believing she’s won, Monty convinces Clarke to fight — even if she’s already handed Josephine the information she needs to triumph. Clearly, Clarke and Monty have a plan, though. That begins with signaling to Bellamy that Clarke is still in there somewhere.

The fight between Clarke and Josephine will continue into next week, but Clarke wins a more important battle during “Nevermind.” She’s been at war with herself since the beginning of the series, stuck between the desire to do better and the difficult choices she’s made to survive. In this episode, she takes the first step toward accepting and overcoming her past — making sense of the “Face your demons” theme of season 6.

Now let’s just hope she successfully returns to her body and begins making amends with the others too.
